Academic Performance Guidelines

In order to continue receiving this merit-based scholarship, LEAD Scholars must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or above at U-M. Scholars must be in good academic standing with the University and/or their school/college. To that end, the LEAD scholarship may be withdrawn if any of these situations occur:

  • The Scholar receives two semesters (consecutive or not) below a 2.0 GPA.
  • The Scholar’s cumulative GPA goes below 2.0.
  • The Scholar is placed on “suspension,” “enrollment withheld,” “mandatory leave,” or any other such designation that requires the student to petition to return to U-M or apply for reinstatement to U-M.
  • The Scholar is dismissed from the University.

Based on when it becomes available, the Alumni Association will request GPA data from the Registrar’s Office at the beginning or end of each semester.

As with any process, this is a guideline for the LEAD program team to follow. Special circumstances may affect the process and will be handled on a case-by-case basis among the LEAD staff, with input from whomever they choose to confer with. The final decision on a case lies with Alumni Association staff and will be consistent with these guidelines. Once a decision is made, there is no appeals process.
